Well, hey! Ready for some hard truths? You’re not nearly as busy as you like to think you are. Wow… I really went there! Okay, stick with me. You may be busy, but you are NOT being productive nor are you adhering to your own rules (ie office hours that you, yourself set up). Some rules are meant to be broken, but the ones YOU set are not those rules. Taking a break in the middle of the day to watch Netflix for an hour is awesome and sometimes exactly what you need! However, taking an impromptu break for 4 hours watching TikTok videos, Netflix, and wandering aimlessly through Instagram feeds <– that is NOT what you need.
Feeling hella called out yet? Because, same.
Okay, so time to move on from calling a bitch out. How are we going to fix this lack of productivty?? First, let’s start with your “rules”. What are they? What are your office hours? How many hours per day do you *actually* work? Do you have dedicated times for breaks, eating, or watching funny dog videos?
If you don’t know the answers to those questions, figure it out. Like actually figure it out. Sit down and write this shit down. I mean it. Do. It. Now. K?
Cool, so now that that’s out of the way. Break your tasks you need and want to do into three lists! Daily, weekly, and monthly. Each of those should be broken down into 2 sections as well: NEEDS and WANTS. Below are examples of my daily, weekly and monthly lists. These are just examples, fill yours in with what makes sense for your business!
So the point of sectioning these into “needs” and “wants” is to give you some sort of checks and balances system for your business! We can also call it positive reinforcement if that makes you happier. Do something from the “needs” column and reward yourself with one from the “wants” column! Make sense?? It’s like the adult version of getting a sticker for doing what your teacher asked of you, but, better!

Sooo, now that you have these lists written it’s time to actually accomplish the shit on these lists! It’s not like that massive running to do list you have in the notes section of your phone. These are things you need to actually do! Until you can just flow through your day and accomplish the things you need to get done without being overpowered by the things you WANT to do, stick with the checks and balances of these lists. You don’t get to do something you WANT until you accomplish something you NEED to do. You feel me? Cool, now get on it.
